What Your Breakfast Says About You

Breakfast is what starts the engine in the morning. As someone who practiced intermittent fasting for a long time, I experienced firsthand how this can contribute to hormonal imbalances, especially when it comes to the menstrual cycle and fertility. It is like wanting to go on a road trip with a car that has little to no fuel. You might manage to drive a short distance, but sooner or later, something will feel off.

Having worked shifts in the past or gone through long university days, it was easy to tell myself, “Whatever, I will just skip breakfast and have a coffee.” In my experience, this is a recipe for disaster. Coffee does not replace breakfast. Skipping the first meal of the day can contribute to cortisol imbalances, blood sugar instability, nutrient deficiencies, and challenges related to hormones such as estrogen, PMS, PCOS, and insulin resistance. Breakfast provides the body with the signal that it is safe, supported, and ready to function.

Set yourself up for success. Prepare your breakfast the evening before if needed. Do whatever it takes, but make nourishment a priority. For me, the highest form of self respect is discipline. Self care is not about perfection, but about consistently showing up for your health. It is a journey of learning what works for you and what does not.

Ask yourself how you want to start your day. Do you want to scroll through your phone for an hour, or use that time to prepare your breakfast, or even simply sit with your thoughts, something that feels uncomfortable for many people today?

The habits you follow shape your life, your health, and your happiness. Implementing habits that support you long term is what truly makes a difference. Start with a foundation of small, supportive habits that work for you. Do not start painting a house that is unstable and built on habits that do not support your wellbeing.
